Over the past few years, HTC’s mid-range Desire line of smartphones has attracted a lot of attention for those who are after a solid smartphone but without paying a premium as the Desire range has shifted its focus from the top-end of the smartphone market towards the medium/budget section.

HTC’s first phone of 2014 is the HTC Desire 816 which they have proudly dubbed as their flagship mid-ranger and was unveiled earlier this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The HTC Desire 816 packs a lot features in an excellent design which definitely makes it a strong contender in the 2014 mid-range smartphone market.

The design of the HTC’s latest device has clearly taken inspiration from the successful premium HTC One range as the device sports a sleek, simple design, minimal screen bezel and dual front-facing speakers.

Clocking in at 5.5 inches, the Desire HTC 816 falls under the Phablet subcategory. Its larger screen makes it more user-friendly and offers a superior viewing experience to previous Desire models.

The HTC Desire 816 features a plastic body which comprises of a combination of glossy and matte finishes, giving the device a more premium feel. The device will be available in a range of colours, including: orange, black, white and a vibrant sea-green turquoise shade.

Smartphone Technology

The HTC Desire 816 runs on Android 4.4 KitKat and features HTC Sense 6.0, making it an easy-to-use and powerful smartphone. The screen has a resolution of 720p, which, although it falls short of HTC’s higher end offering, is pretty respectable.

Midrange smartphones are somewhat notorious for compromising camera capabilities, especially front-facing ones. However, the HTC 816 challenges this trend as the device is equipped with a respectable 13MP rear-facing camera and an outstanding 5MP front-facing camera.

The HTC Desire 816 is also a speedy and responsive device as it supports 4G and has a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.

Pricing and Release Date

While HTC did not release a price for the forthcoming handset, based on previous HTC Desire prices and the fact that this is a mid-range handset, it has been speculated that HTC Desire 816 will cost no more than £250 and possibly as little as £150. HTC have not given a definitive launch date for the HTC Desire, but their blog informs us that we can expect to see the handset hit the shelves sometime this spring.
